There has been an update in what the laboratory are accepting for testing Vitamin D meaning we can no longer routinely request this blood test.
The University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust have provided guidance in regard to this, please click below for more information.
Routine screening of vitamin D is not recommended in asymptomatic individuals – uhbpathology.com
However, there are some medical conditions where it can be requested:
- Bone problems such as osteomalacia or osteoporosis
- There is evidence of a metabolic bone disease, such as chronic kidney disease–related bone disorder
- The patient has persistent low or high calcium levels in the blood
- A hospital specialist (such as rheumatology, endocrinology, or renal) requests it
- Suspicion of childhood conditions such as rickets
- Coeliac disease requiring monitoring
- Pregnancy
- Muscle aches associated with a previously raised alkaline phosphatase
